LUSH

LUSH has been recognised as an ABA100® Winner for Business Sustainability in The Australian Business Awards 2016. The Australian Business Award for Business Sustainability recognises organisations that have successfully implemented initiatives that demonstrate leadership and commitment to sustainable business practices.

Lush is a ‘cosmetic grocer’, selling handmade and inventive products loaded with the freshest ingredients and essential oils. Lush believes in standing up for animal rights, protecting the environment and supporting humanitarian causes. Sustainability is their virtue; and it is their sincere sense of purpose that underpins every business decision that they deliver.

LUSH invents all their products, source their own ingredients and manufacture and retail their own products. LUSH is always mindful of how their products and business practices interact with the environment and people. Sustainability is at the heart of LUSH, which translates through their six core values; fighting animal testing, having freshest cosmetics online, ethical buying, 100% vegetarian products, handmade products and naked products. They invent solid products without the need for packaging and their unavoidable packaging is recyclable. Their strict freshness policy means they can minimise the use of synthetics and create high quality products on a daily basis. LUSH is also an innovator of environmentally friendly alternatives to hazardous materials.

LUSH supports Fair Trade and Community Trade initiatives and partners with local communities across the world to facilitate permaculture projects. The SLush Fund has enabled LUSH to go beyond a sustainable organic alternative and conventional agriculture to permaculture projects. They also invest in permaculture start-ups and regenerative environmental programs around the world. For LUSH, sustainability is about looking more broadly than the impact of what’s happening now, to instead look at what they can be doing to re-generate and repair past damage. Through ethical buying, they strive to stop the cycle of poverty for farmers, and in some cases, reverse environmental destruction.

LUSH makes responsible decisions about where they purchase items from and prefer to manufacture in the country they trade in, which reduces the carbon used in transportation. Much of their financial profit is reinvested into the company, to ensure effectiveness of their environmental sustainability initiative. The LUSH Prize was also designed to reward groups or individuals working in the field of cruelty-free scientific research to help bring an end to animal testing.
