V/Line is an operating agency as part of Department of Transport (DoT), delivering services under a Partnership Agreement with Public Transport Victoria (PTV). The services V/Line delivers include, operation of passenger services, provision of freight access, maintenance of railway infrastructure and fleet assets, delivering projects when engaged to do so.
The ability of Victoria’s transport system to move people and goods is crucial to the competitiveness of Victoria’s economy and its social wellbeing. Integral to Victoria’s transport system is its regional rail and bus networks that now enable in excess of 21 million passenger journeys every year.
The regional rail network carries a further 77,000 containers and 3.1 million tonnes of freight annually providing critical trade links across Victoria. V/Line is directly responsible for facilitating these movements. In the 2017-18 financial year, rail and coach customer trips totalled over 20.8 million, an increase of over eight per cent on the previous year.
