It is often stated that Formula One (F1) is the only sport where practice is impossible. Continuous success instead relies upon calculated preparations for each unique racing situation. To add pressure to an already complex situation, the time between F1 seasons is short, and on-track testing time is restricted to just a few days. This means 99% of the work is done off the track, relying on simulations and data analytics.
TIBCO Spotfire leverages the power of artificial intelligence to enable the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team to test out millions of scenarios in quick succession and isolate the best performing car set-up in a matter of minutes. This enables speedy adaptation under strong time pressure, which gives the team a competitive edge on the field.
Insights driven by TIBCO help the team maximise the impact of limited resources, such as wind tunnel time, by training data science models to predict things like tire wear, weather effects, and downforce (critical to a car’s ability to grip the track) as a function of all car configuration parameters. This directly translates to winning. Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team are eight-time consecutive FIA World Constructors champions, amassing over 79 race wins since working with TIBCO (2016 to 2022).
Ultimately, TIBCO technology successfully predicts how any given car and driver will perform in a race, enabling engineers to optimise car set-up to maximise chances of victory.
Furthermore, TIBCO’s Cost Visualiser Tool (CVT) enables designers, engineers, and budget planners to better predict and manage costs for design, manufacture, and fine-tuning of race cars. Tracking and measuring car development costs helps the team remain within recent tight budget caps set by FIA , and understand areas of overspend and underspend in real time.
