Paramount ANZ – Network Ten
Paramount ANZ – Network Ten has been selected as an ABA100® Winner for HR Management in The Australian Business Awards 2022. The Australian Business Award for HR Management [HRM] recognises organisations that have successfully implemented initiatives that demonstrate excellence in human resource management.
“Whilst the Paramount ANZ business had an organic desire and focus on DE&I, the HR team played a critical role in harnessing this desire and directing specific actions in each of the employee lifecycle stages to increase and improve DEI across the board, in all phases. Being recognised for this work as a HR team is something that we are immensely proud of.
“We also acknowledge that our work is not yet done. We remain committed to continuing down the path of learning and improving and that the actions implemented has set a foundational direction for the network to lead the way, internally and externally, in the broadcasting industry with regard to better DEI practices.”
How does an organisation increase its diversity profile in a meaningful and natural way? This question was posed to the Paramount Human Resources team in early 2021 to integrate the increased importance on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) seamlessly into the day-to-day operations of the business.
With the focus on DEI more important than ever for existing and prospective employees, the HR team were paramount in delivering actions across the employee lifecycle that promoted diversity, created a safer workplace for all, and put the business in a position to lead DEI within the media industry.
With little diversity data on record, business leads asked for simple yet effective actions to be rolled out across the business that would answer the questions of what our workforce was made up, what was important to those employees and how the overall DEI could be improved both internally and externally.
With this in mind, the Human Resources (HR) team collaborated with all facets of the business to deliver a solution implementing several actions that addressed DEI through HR fundamentals. Changes made to improve each stage of the employee lifestyle were captured and included:
1. Attraction, recruitment and selection
2. Performance
3. Development and succession
4. Engagement and retention.
The value in delivering actions through HR fundamentals guaranteed seamless integration of DEI within the business without the risk of the initiatives coming across as a ‘tick the box’ business requirement.
It provided value and meaning to employees in line with the business’s strategy to reflect internally what on-air programming was aiming to achieve – better representation and inclusion of all voices on television.
With support and engagement from leadership, the actions implemented resulted in a more inclusive workplace with improved processes and strategies, more accurate representation on-screen, and wider importance placed on continuing to build a diverse and equitable environment for employees, stakeholders and audiences.
