Suncorp

Suncorp has been selected as an ABA100® Winner for Change Management in The Australian Business Awards 2023. The Australian Business Award for Change Management [CMA] recognises organisations that have successfully implemented initiatives that demonstrate excellence in change management.

I am so proud of this award as recognition of the calibre of our change team, and their drive to transform the way we work at Suncorp. Through Momentum we challenged ourselves to shift our delivery mindsets and methodology to embrace true business agility across our entire organisation. A year into the model we are seeing significant benefits both for the business and for our people in terms of their engagement and the customer value being delivered. None of this would have been possible without the dedicated team whose unwavering commitment supported and scaffolded this transformation. They have turned complex challenges into opportunities and transformed traditional learning into meaningful continuous improvement. They were the driving force of our transformation.

Lauren Lance, Executive General Manager, Enterprise Delivery, Suncorp

Suncorp is an organisation with a well-recognised history of agile project delivery. Technology teams have long been empowered to utilise Agile methodology to deliver innovative products to customers fast. The purpose Suncorp people rally around is ‘Building futures and protecting what matters’. One strategic pillar supporting this purpose and laying the foundation for a sustainable Suncorp is ‘Customer led’ – creating digital-first and personalised customer experiences.

As Suncorp grows towards this ambition, it became clear there was a need to align the existing pockets of delivery excellence, which used a spectrum of Agile and traditional delivery methodologies, and build a bespoke operating model that works on an enterprise scale – ‘Momentum’. The Momentum change management approach led the business through completely reshaping the way they think about project delivery, which was critical to adopting the new model.

The Momentum Program is an enterprise-wide initiative impacting the Banking and Insurance, project delivery and technology teams across Australia and New Zealand. It is an end-to-end project delivery model centred around customer value and building high-performing teams. Momentum follows Agile principles, but it’s a model designed by Suncorp for Suncorp, leveraging existing areas of excellence and aligning employees to meet customer expectations better.

The Momentum change approach had four big objectives: Build consistent understanding of, the excitement around, and buy-in to entirely new ways of working; embed the mindsets and culture shift required for people to meaningfully transition away from well-established ways of working; ensure people had the skills they needed to start work in the model; and launch Momentum.

The team rolled out information and built the story progressively through a comprehensive seven-week masterclass series to support change at scale and build knowledge and capability around the model. Each masterclass covered a different topic related to Momentum, with Suncorp’s purpose and the Momentum Mindsets baked into each. Sessions were tailored to each part of the business to recognise varying levels of capability, allowing consistent knowledge to be built across the organisation.

The successful launch of the Momentum model sent Suncorp further along the path to industry-leading delivery excellence. The magic in the Momentum model is that it is holistic, aligning delivery professionals enterprise-wide to maximise our resources and unite us in our purpose of Building Futures and Protecting What Matters. The transformation is ongoing, but the progress that has been made establishes Suncorp Group as a leader in the industry, and the change, communication and capability uplift approach was critical to preparing the business for implementing and embedding what will likely be one of the most significant transformations in most people’s careers.
