Telstra

Telstra has been selected as an ABA100® Winner for Change Management in The Australian Business Awards 2023. The Australian Business Award for Change Management [CMA] recognises organisations that have successfully implemented initiatives that demonstrate excellence in change management.

“It is with great pleasure that we accept the 2023 ABA100 Award for Change Management in recognition of the change we delivered for the Telstra Legal Restructure. As the largest corporate restructure in Australian history, this program supported over 30,000 employees, 9.3million customers, thousands of partners, landlords and vendors through this transition. The change team was led by two experienced program leads in Rachael Gordon and Sue McDonnell with an additional 13 change professionals to deliver seamless outcomes for all our stakeholders. This team pulled together the work of multiple functional streams to provide a consistent, relevant and engaging change program that allowed fast and effective adoption of the outcomes. We are very proud of the change work we are delivering at Telstra and this recognition of our change practices is a wonderful testament to the maturity of Change Management in our organisation.”

Telstra is Australia’s leading telecommunications and technology company, offering a full range of communications services and competing in all telecommunications markets. Telstra’s network is the largest in Australia, providing 18.8 million retail mobile services, 3.8 million retail fixed bundles and standalone data services and 960,000 retail fixed standalone voice services.

Telstra successfully implemented the new Legal Restructure and operationalised all new entities consisting of Telstra Group Limited, Telstra Limited, Telstra Corporation Limited, Telstra International Holdings Pty Ltd and Amplitel HoldCo on 1 January 2023. The program was delivered over 28 months commencing December 2020 and had more than 400 program and working group members organised across two management offices consisting of 33 workstreams, with an overarching Change Management Program.

Although the program was designed to legally restructure and separate the organisation into different legal entities, the aim of the Change Management program was to ensure the business would continue as normal and their people would still identify themselves as Telstra employees, working seamlessly across the different legal entities. The Change Management Program prepared Telstra’s people and its external stakeholders for this restructuring before, during and after the restructuring on 1 January 2023. The key to the success of the Change Management Program was innovative planning through their Change Program Pillars set up and delivered through their 3-phase approach, which consisted of Reset, Run and Reinforcement.

The Post Implementation also proved the success of the Change Program being rated in the ten overarching program strengths in the Post Implementation Reviews. These were rated by Telstra’s Group Executives, Executives, Stakeholders, and fellow team members.
