The PTA is responsible for the operation of all bus, train, and ferry services in the greater Perth metropolitan area under the Transperth brand. The PTA also operates public transport services in the State’s regional centres under the TransRegional brand; road coach and rail passenger services to regional areas under the Transwa brand; and administers and manages SchoolBus Services. In addition to operating these transport services, the PTA designs builds, and maintains public transport infrastructure and protects the long-term viability of Western Australia’s rail corridor and railway infrastructure.
The Public Transport Authority (PTA) recently delivered the Lakelands Station project, a project of community collaboration and engagement under the METRONET program of works. As a cornerstone of Perth’s public transport network, the PTA is committed to delivering infrastructure and fostering meaningful connections with the communities it services.
Lakelands Station opened on Sunday, June 11, 2023 and represents a significant achievement in community collaboration. Lakelands Station serves as a vital transport hub in Perth’s southern suburbs while embodying principles of inclusivity, sustainability, and cultural recognition.
From project inception, the PTA prioritised community involvement, recognising the importance of engaging stakeholders at every project stage. Through a series of innovative strategies, including community pop-up events, targeted information sessions, and the establishment of a dedicated Community Reference Group (CRG), the project team ensured that the voices of residents, businesses, and interest groups were valued.
Accessibility and inclusivity were imperative to the project, with the METRONET Access and Inclusion Reference Group (AIRG) playing a role in shaping the station’s design to meet the diverse needs of all community members. Additionally, meaningful engagement with the Aboriginal community, guided by the Gnarla Biddi (Our Pathways) Strategy, ensured that cultural perspectives were integrated into the project.
Public art, inspired by local culture and history, added a dimension to the station which helped foster a sense of pride and ownership amongst community. Furthermore, environmental considerations guided sustainable construction practices, ensuring that the station’s impact on the surrounding ecosystem was minimised.
The collaborative efforts of the PTA, project contractor ADCO Constructions, and the local community culminated in the successful completion of Lakelands Station. This projectstands as a testamentto the power of community collaboration in drivingpositive change and creating lasting legacies for future generations.
Through its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and meaningful engagement, the PTA has demonstrated its dedication to building stronger, more resilient communities while advancing Perth’s public transport infrastructure. Lakelands Station is a symbol of the impactful partnerships between the PTA and the communities it serves, earning it recognition as a leader in community collaboration.
