Serco

Serco has been selected as an ABA100® Winner for Community Contribution in The Australian Business Awards 2024. The Australian Business Award for Community Contribution [CCA] recognises organisations that implement initiatives that have a positive impact on the community and generate outcomes that have a long-term benefit.

Serco, a leading provider of essential services across the justice system, is dedicated to improving community safety through a rehabilitative approach to justice. By focusing on education, criminogenic needs, and reducing reoffending, Serco aims to support the successful reintegration of offenders into society while ensuring community safety. Serco helps governments improve community safety by pursuing a rehabilitative approach to justice, focusing on education, criminogenic needs, and the key outcome of reducing reoffending. As a result, Serco is responsible for ensuring that those left on the outside are not duly punished due to the crimes committed by their loved ones.

Recognising the significant impact of parental incarceration on children, Serco partnered with SHINE for Kids and Green Fox Studio to address a critical gap in prison literature. The initiative aimed to provide children with stories written by incarcerated fathers, fostering connection and understanding between parent and child.

The collaboration resulted in “The Sun Still Shines,” the first book written by incarcerated fathers in their own voices. Through the StoryBook program at Clarence Correctional Centre in New South Wales, operated by Serco, prisoners collaborated on crafting a manuscript addressing the needs of children with a parent in custody.

Over a seven-month period, prisoners, supported by Serco and SHINE for Kids staff, drafted the manuscript amongst the daily workings of Australia’s largest prison. The final copy reflected the fathers’ desire to communicate love, understanding, and the reality of their circumstances to their children. A passionate team was assembled to manage the book’s design, production, and introduction to the market. Collaboration with Green Fox Studio and Indigi-Print ensured authentic representation and First Nations involvement in the project.

“The Sun Still Shines” has made a significant impact by reaching over 40,000 individuals in custody across Australia, bringing hope and support to children and families affected by the criminal justice system. Released for Father’s Day 2023 and has since made a significant impact:

  • Integrated into SHINE for Kids programs across Australia, including Storytime and mentoring initiatives.
  • Distributed to public and prison libraries nationwide, facilitating understanding and connection for affected families.
  • Recognised with a global Serco Pulse Award, acknowledging the team’s commitment to core values and innovative initiatives.

“The Sun Still Shines” demonstrates Serco’s commitment to community safety and the wellbeing of those affected by the criminal justice system. Through collaboration and creativity, this initiative has brought hope and support to thousands of individuals in custody and their families, fostering meaningful connections and reducing the cycle of intergenerational offending.
