Department of Transport and Main Roads
Department of Transport and Main Roads Digital Licence App has been selected as an ABA100® Winner for Tech Innovation in The Australian Business Awards 2024. The Australian Business Award for Tech Innovation [TIA] recognises products and services that provide innovative technological solutions for business and market needs.
The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) plays a crucial role in assisting Queenslanders and visitors to move around freely and easily by managing the state’s comprehensive transport system. It also provides over 90% of the Queensland adult population with a key form of photographic identity documentation, such as a driver’s licence, marine licence, or photo identification card.
Thanks to TMR’s innovative Digital Licence Project, 4 million Queenslanders can now easily ‘go digital’ wherever verification of their identity, age, or authority to perform a function, such as driving a vehicle or vessel, is required.
The Digital Licence app is a strong example of TMR’s commitment to modernising services for Queenslanders. It is a user-friendly, secure, and internationally compliant digital alternative to physical licences—developed by Queenslanders for Queenslanders.
The Digital Licence app offers optional and opt-in features, is free on app stores, and complies with ISO IEC 18013-5. Users control their information using a consent-based sharing model and versatile verification options. The app functions online and offline, incorporating advanced security measures like PIN, Face ID, and Touch ID. Users can access TMR online services, provide feedback, and securely reset their devices.
The Digital Licence provides a cost-effective, user-friendly, and user-controlled solution, offering flexibility, compliance with standards, secure sharing options, and offline functionality. Users benefit from security features, easy transfer to new devices, and active involvement through feedback mechanisms. The app ensures an outstanding user experience, aligns with customer preferences, and ensures continuous improvement.
Users receive robust support through TMR Customer Service Centres, Call Centres, and online services. Feedback channels are available through the website, email, and app. How-to videos and business packs enhance user understanding and acceptance, fostering a collaborative relationship between users and TMR.
The Digital Licence app was developed through a human-centered design approach, involving diverse customer groups. Continuous customer input, microservices introduction, compliance with international standards, and robust security measures contribute to the app’s success. The app underwent thorough penetration testing, demonstrating its resilience to security threats.
Legislation was passed in 2020 making the Digital Licence legally equivalent to the physical card, giving Queensland businesses assurance that they can legally accept it.
The Queensland Digital Licence Project is a pioneering initiative that reflects TMR’s commitment to innovation, user-centric design, and meeting evolving customer needs. The app addresses challenges associated with physical licences and positions Queensland as a leader in digital transformation within the Australian transportation sector. Its features, benefits, and robust security measures make it a comprehensive, user-friendly, and globally recognised solution.
The ongoing commitment to customer feedback ensures continuous improvement, solidifying the Digital Licence’s position as a cutting-edge, secure, and adaptable identification solution.
