Ampol Australia
Ampol Australia has been selected as an ABA100® Winner for Business Transformation in The Australian Business Awards 2025. The Australian Business Award for Business Transformation [BTR] recognises organisations that have successfully implemented initiatives that demonstrate excellence in business transformation.
Ampol is an independent Australian company and the nation’s leader in transport fuels, operating the country’s largest petrol and convenience network while managing the refining, importing, and marketing of fuels and lubricants. With a history spanning over 120 years, Ampol combines deep industry expertise with a forward-looking strategy. Recognising the changing nature of the energy landscape, Ampol is actively evolving its portfolio to include renewable fuels, electric charging, hydrogen, and other low-carbon solutions, ensuring it continues to deliver on its purpose of Powering better journeys, today and tomorrow.
To succeed in this transformation, Ampol recognises that its people are its greatest differentiator. The Ampol Sales Academy (ASA) plays a critical role in developing the capability, leadership, and customer engagement skills of Ampol’s workforce; ensuring employees are equipped to deliver excellence today while preparing for the opportunities of tomorrow. For this reason, Ampol established the Ampol Sales Academy (ASA) in 2021—a proprietary capability program designed to build and nurture exceptional sales and leadership capabilities that inspire customer preference and drive profitable growth. Purpose-built for Ampol, the ASA employs a mastery-based model that provides a structured roadmap for development, enabling employees to demonstrate their capabilities before advancing to higher levels. Since its inception, ASA has consistently delivered year-on-year results, with more than 160 participants across B2B sales, non-sales functions, and leadership roles progressing through the Starting Lineup (Sales 1.0) and Professional (Sales 2.0) programs. In August 2025, ASA expanded further with the launch of the Master Program (Sales 3.0). This advanced stream extends the Academy’s impact into leadership mastery and specialist disciplines, including Trading & Shipping, that directly support Ampol’s international growth and diversification into renewable fuels, energy solutions, and trading.
ASA has been developed in collaboration with Flourish Consultancy and enriched through the expertise of internal subject matter experts, ensuring content is both strategically relevant and grounded in Ampol’s unique ways of working. This long-standing partnership with Flourish has been successfully sustained since the Academy’s inception in 2021, providing consistent quality, deep alignment with Ampol’s culture, and ongoing innovation in learning design. In 2025, ASA expanded its partnerships to include MENNTA Energy Solutions, a globally recognised provider of specialist energy and trading education. MENNTA brings internationally benchmarked expertise to ASA’s advanced modules, including Trading & Shipping, which directly supports Ampol’s growing international footprint. As a CPD-accredited provider, MENNTA reinforces the external credibility and professional recognition of ASA’s curriculum. Through these partnerships, ASA combines tailored internal knowledge with world-class external expertise, ensuring learning is both uniquely Ampol and globally relevant. This approach enables the Academy to continuously adapt to changing business needs while elevating the professional standing of Ampol’s people.
ASA has matured into an established program with consistently high engagement levels, now exceeding 85% participation across the business. Positive word-of-mouth has driven interest well beyond its original target audience, with employees across multiple functions recognising the value of ASA’s transferable skills and professional frameworks. Learners are increasingly proactive in enrolment, while leaders actively champion the program through the ASA Leadership Pathway, providing on-the-job coaching and participating as observers in learner assessments. This ensures accountability, continuous improvement, and alignment between leadership and learner development.
The benefits of ASA for Ampol and its customers are clear. Improvements in cultural health have been recorded since the program’s launch, with higher employee engagement scores and more of Ampol’s people reporting that they see themselves as company brand ambassadors. By focusing on the professional development of employees, ASA equips staff to deliver stronger customer engagement and service quality, directly supporting Ampol’s strategic ambition of Powering Better Journeys.
