Ecologiq is an engineering consultancy firm supporting clients since 2019 across various industry segments with special focus towards the renewable energy industry including the Clean Energy Council approved solar retailers and installers across Australia.
Due to high demands for rooftop and ground mount solar in the market in the last few years, Ecologiq were regularly approached by retailers and installers for design and engineering services for their projects, however, they noticed a market gap and saw the installers struggling during project delivery phases.
The need: Engineering services are being majorly outsourced by solar retailers/installation companies but there is no one stop solution engineering company to cater these services. The services which were outsourced by them included
• Electrical design and engineering
• Grid/electrical distributor connection and approvals
• Structural engineering
• Solar distribution board design, engineering, and supply
• Secondary injection testing services
• Audit and compliance verification post installation
The struggle: Solar retailers and installers would struggle to get these services in time from third parties due to different timeline of delivery for each service provider. Further, all these service providers were working in isolation and there was no coordination to make sure one engineering solution from one provider matches the requirement for the other provider.
Due to this and different requirements from the consultants engaged caused multiple changes in project scope and delays in project deliverables which resulted the retailers/installers to spend a major time of their project delivery in coordination activities across all providers. Some of the key concerns we noticed are listed below:
Initial Project Phase
• lack of in-depth design analysis
• limited understanding of site including electrical and structural infrastructure
• usage of standard approach across all size projects
Project Delivery Phase
• regular design variations
• heavy price variations
• issues in obtaining approvals from statutory bodies
Post Project Delivery Phase
• project testing and handover issues
• loss of generation due to inefficient design
• losing end customer trust in renewable solution offered
The solution: ecologiq ran a 6-month survey with large solar retailers discussing their issues and the project details where they faced above issues. Considering all above factors and to cater the needs of the solar market industry, Ecologiq designed the Customised Solar Solution (CSS) package.
This package covered all services being outsourced by the installers and retailers under one umbrella. The CSS package team included:
1. CEC accredited solar designers
2. Chartered structural engineers
3. Project Management experts
4. Switchboard manufactures
5. Technicians (electrical)
6. Power quality testing (voltage testing officer)
