Tina Chawner, Founder & Managing Director - Yellow Hat Consulting

Yellow Hat Consulting is a female-led change, codesign and strategic communications consultancy founded by Tina Chawner in March 2021. Yellow Hat’s vision is to become known as the best in town for change and strategic communications and to have an impact on their clients.

Over the last couple of years, Yellow Hat was engaged by a client introducing a new strategy, changing how it would provide services. They were moving to digital channels and transforming their operations, significantly impacting their 650 staff. The organisation’s employee survey results showed their team needed to understand the organisation’s future direction better, and there were opportunities to improve communication from Executive Leaders, raising support for the new strategy.

In line with their codesign approach, the Yellow Hat team brought the Executive Leadership Team and staff representatives from across the organisation together to codesign their future vision. Using this content, they articulated an organisational narrative. They provided coaching to leaders on how to communicate and share the narrative and how to ask and listen to feedback. They worked with the leaders longer as they provided an excellent opportunity for upskilling and support.

Yellow Hat also developed several communication products to support leaders. These products equipped the leadership and gave them the confidence to have conversations with their teams about the organisation’s future direction and gain support for the changes while still being open to feedback.

Yellow Hat’s effective implementation of communication products and Executive Leadership coaching saw an increase in the organisation’s annual employee survey at the individual, group, and agency levels. This was supported throughout by other qualitative measures. Overall, feedback suggested leaders were leading change from the front and empowering managers to lead conversations with staff. In turn, staff understood the reason for the change and were involved in designing ways to achieve the new vision.
