Civeo Pty Ltd (‘Civeo’) is a leading provider of workforce accommodation solutions, dedicated to helping people maintain healthy and productive lives while living and working away from home. Founded in 1988 as The MAC Services Group, the company was acquired by Oil States International in 2010 before being spun off in 2014 to become Civeo Corporation, a global company with regional operations in Australia, the United States and Canada. With approximately 30,000 rooms globally, the company has over 9,000 permanent rooms in Australia in remote locations across Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia. Their unique approach focuses on guest wellbeing, operational efficiency and community building. In July 2019, Civeo further expanded its service offering with the acquisition of Action Industrial Catering Pty Ltd (‘Action’), providing catering and support services to the remote mining and construction industry. Action currently operates approximately 900,000 room nights per year for leading iron ore, gold, nickel and battery mineral producers. The company’s name – Civeo – is a blend of two Latin words; Civitas meaning ‘community’, and Aveo meaning ‘be well’. Their goal is to provide the next best thing to home – comfortable, efficient and engaging living environments where people can rest, recharge and feel connected. Their villages support the wellbeing of both staff and guests, contributing to their own success as well as that of their clients. Civeo believes that investing in its people is another major contribution to their success. The company’s commitment to training and career development enables employees to grow and advance their careers while supporting Civeo’s industry-leadership position.

Civeo’s Human Resources Strategy centres on helping people remain healthy, productive and connected while living and working away from home. This aims to ensure its employees are confident and committed to delivering in their respective roles. It also seeks to address a myriad of challenges associated with the hospitality and resources industry. As the company continues to grow and evolve, Civeo strives to ensure it equips its employees and leaders with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to respond to new challenges and market changes. An integral piece of Civeo’s Human Resources Strategy is its Learning and Development program, offering learning options that are both impactful and industry benchmarked. The program analyses employee feedback, industry trends and company needs to ensure the offering meets the requirements of the business whilst also providing meaningful development opportunities for company employees. These opportunities link directly back to re-engaging employees in the workplace. Civeo’s mission is to provide remarkable experiences for the people and communities they serve. As a company, its ethos is to provide its employees remarkable learning experiences tailored to their career goals, while also supporting Civeo’s wider needs. From its annual budgeting process, to its Compliance Training Matrix, through to soliciting opinions from employees past and present, Civeo look to ensure training is incorporated across all aspects of the business. Given Civeo’s workforce is predominantly based in remote and regional areas, it is extremely proud to be able to offer training, including recognised qualifications, to areas where learning opportunities are not as frequently available.

As its business is so unique due to the challenge of attracting skilled workers to isolated locations and working lifestyles which may remove them from their regular family support system, Civeo have a deep commitment to training and promoting staff from within. It provides training in the technical and managerial skills needed for staff in their current roles with a specific focus on safety, customer service and leadership development. It also builds competency required for future projects and positions through eLearning modules, face-to-face delivery and nationally certified programs as well as licensing training offered by external providers. Civeo’s training offering embraces a philosophy of ‘passion and process’; it understands that in order to be successful, training programs needs to instil a genuine enthusiasm while also building a framework that ensures consistent results. Civeo’s programs are designed with this in mind, providing both inspiration and encouragement, but also a toolbox of practical skills and approaches to deliver reliable outcomes. The company’s suite of training includes structured courses that are aimed at frontline teams and managers, including both generalist and role-specific business processes. By designing a number of its own courses inhouse, Civeo is also able to tailor programs to address unique criteria, adapting courses to run as a one-hour motivational talk, a full-day workshop, or even a series of workshops delivered over a period of time.

Civeo believes the purpose of a training program is to impart knowledge of a system or process to someone new to that process. Civeo offers many different career streams and the unique opportunity to change paths as employees learn the business and gain new skills. The company provides training and career development that allows people to succeed in their current role and build new competencies for future projects and positions. In its most recent Employee Engagement Survey, conducted in February 2020, Civeo asked its employees for feedback on its learning and development initiatives and report an increase in respondents stating they are able to perform their job well due to the on-the-job training Civeo provides. They also report increased confidence in employees believing they will have a successful career in the company, recognising the career opportunities that are available to them. Civeo has seen a higher rate of internal promotions over the past 12 months, with 78 staff members being promoted during 2019. Civeo’s learning and development initiatives are also benefitting the business in many other ways, including making a positive impact on staff retention with the company showing a reduction in turnover from 43% in 2018 to 32% in 2019. Within the company’s operational workforce, where the majority of their training and development programs are focused, turnover reduced from 48% in 2018 to 32% in 2019. Whilst it is continuing to reduce its turnover figures, this significant decrease has created a more stable and competent workforce enabling improved business success.

The ongoing redesign of Civeo’s training programs show a deep commitment to working closely with the business, ensuring that courses are highly customised. Civeo believes its people are at the heart of its success; regardless of their role in the organisation, they all share a common trait – they are passionate about caring for their guests and genuinely care about each other. Their learning culture is one infused with organisational values, systems and practices that support and encourage both team members and the greater organisation to increase knowledge, competence and performance levels. This, in turn, promotes continuous improvements, supports individual growth and achieves strategic goals. Civeo believe that investing in its people is an investment in its success, referring back to their mission, which is to provide remarkable experiences for the people and communities they serve.
