One Playground

One Playground has been selected as an ABA100® Winner for Training Excellence in The Australian Business Awards 2024. The Australian Business Award for Training Excellence [TRX] recognises organisations that have successfully implemented initiatives that demonstrate leadership and commitment to education and training.

One Playground has grown from an outdoor bootcamp in Surry Hills to one of Australia’s leading fitness and wellness companies. With four sites and plans for expansion, over 16,000 members, more than 115 coaches and 130 group fitness instructors, One Playground is changing what it means to be a ‘gym’ and paving the way for a holistic approach to wellbeing.

In fact, One Playground has coined the term “Superboutique”, encapsulating how its members have access to boutique class experiences, knowledgable personal trainers, and 24-hour state-of-the-art gyms all under one roof for a fraction of the cost of paying for each of these services individually.

A large contributor to this “Superboutique” offering is the high-quality personal training members have access to. This is down to prioritising their coaches’ onboarding, training and development.

The Elevated Coach Program is transformative, demonstrating how One Playground’s offering stands out from the rest of the industry.

The program was developed because senior leaders saw a gap between traditional personal training qualifications and the skills and knowledge actually needed to start in the industry.

According to AusActive’s‘ Fitness Industry Workforce’ 2016, 51% of PTs have been in the industry for less than two years*. That means personal trainers have a higher chance of failing than success. This is due to the lack of support and education that new coaches receive when first starting out and rent-based models taking huge chunks of their income.

The Elevated Coach Progam is here to change that for the One Playground coaches.

The Elevated Coach Program runs for 13 weeks and combines business mentoring, sales training, and technical education. Best of all, coaches are paid for it all.

The program aims to build coaches’ confidence and competency in all areas of their work, including client acquisition, client screening, programming, leading sessions, business management, and more. Coaches start with a three-day induction that prepares them for their first week in the club via in-person training, in-club inductions at their home clubs focusing on club integration and live practice, and online learning.

After this, a 12-week club immersion is designed to hone skills in product knowledge, business building, business management, technical ability, and service delivery. This is supplemented by online training to reinforce knowledge and introduce further new information.

Elevated Coaches have multiple touchpoints throughout the week with the Head of Coaching, Head of Education, Head Coaches, Mentors and executive suite.

This, combined with in-club experience working directly with One Playground members, means that coaches can put what they have learned into practice, reinforcing their knowledge and increasing the likelihood of success.

The results speak for themselves, as 94% of Elevated Coaches feel better equipped to start work as a coach after completing the Elevated Coach Program, an average increase of 91%.

94.1% of coaches would recommend the elevated coach program to another coach, and 94% could see themselves working in the fitness industry in 5 years’ time.

The Elevated Coach Program has seen some changes over its lifetime, and ongoing reviews and refinements are being made to ensure One Playground continues to give its coaches the best chance at success.
