PetRescue is a national for-purpose organisation that offers free programs and services to help millions of Australians discover the joy of adopting a new family member and help more than 950 rescue organisations, shelters, and pounds save the lives of thousands of rescue pets. The Safe and Sound Pounds Program is a prevention and intervention program designed to keep pets safe. Of the pets listed on PetRescue, 95% are successfully adopted. 

An estimated 100,000 healthy pets are being killed in pounds across Australia every year without even being offered the chance to find a loving home. The current pound system is underfunded and outdated; there are no laws, uniform standards, or way to guarantee that animals are treated humanely. 

PetRescue believe that every pet deserves to be safe, respected and loved, and their objective is to create a future with:

• A transformed animal welfare system that protects and cares for vulnerable pets; and
• A universal, proactive, well-funded, recognised process of support, rehabilitation and care.

PetRescue has worked with councils, shelters and animal welfare organisations for the past five years to reform the pound system. They include projects that enable visibility and transparency to benchmark, understand, and track progress; and assisted rehoming programs to reduce the number of pets in shelters, rescues and pounds. When fewer pets are in the pound system, there are fewer to kill or rehome. 

With an average of over 750,000 visitors per month, Petrescue.com.au is a free service connecting thousands of rescue pets to thousands of adopters daily. The website houses Australia’s largest searchable database of rescue pets and rescue organisations and enables adopters to find a pet with just a few clicks.
